Logbook - 21, November of 2007 | 05:11G'day mate!
The busy Gold Cost, destination number one here in Australia, has 44km of beaches with a blue water, nice waves for who likes a good surf, restaurants, bars, pubs, shoppings, beyond 446km of navigable canals, being equivalent in extension, as nine times the canals of Veneza. The region has a style of our Balneário Camboriú attracting tourists of the entire world, but in special, attracting the residents of Brisbane, bigger city in the neighborhoods. If you are looking for a good nightlife, you will be in the perfect place, but can not be afraid of spending money. As we can not permit this luxury in our trip, we went to the mountains, heading the Lamington National Park. The park retain subtropical forests with many rivers, waterfalls, walk-trails and many animals, prevailing the wallabies, relatives of the kangaroos, however with a smaller stature. We’ve walked about 9km in the park, appreciating its centenary trees with its huge roots. We’ve been until the Coomera Falls, an impressive waterfall that pours its pure water in one high canyon, thus forming the Coomera River.
“Talking about pure water, we would like to give eminence for this subject that is so important. Australia is passing big difficulties with drinking water. In the truth, if the entire world does not open their eyes for this problem, in a near future all we will have absence of water, therefore only 3% of the all water in the planet is pure, and most of it in form of ice in the polar region. This means that only 0.6% is available for our use. There is no other way of water resource, not to be this process that is happening billions of years, where the water is evaporated for the sun and it is transpirated by the plants, transforming into clouds, raining, following for streams and rivers until the oceans and filling the underground reserves to take care of the life of the human being. After all this process, it evaporates and falls in rain again. Here in Australia the situation is more serious, therefore is the driest inhabited continent. Let us see some numbers from here to imagine what it also happens in the other countries: the water used for the Australians (only 10% of the population of Brazil) annually could almost full the port of Sydney 50 times, that means, individually the people use for the same period the amount of water that would fill an olympic swimming pool! And great part of this water finishes changing its composition for the great amount of chemical products that are mixed on it…”
Coming back to the hike, we’ve meet several wallabies where some left running, or better, jumping and others stayed in our side as if nothing was happening. It was very interesting to see them holding the plants and eating with its small front legs. Still on this day we’ve gave food for several parrots that sited in our hands, arms, shoulders and even in our heads. Really nice!
Our next destination was Brisbane, the capital of the state of Queensland, with approximately a million and a half of inhabitants. A cosmopolite city with an organized and pretty architecture.
In Brisbane, we were waiting for a reply of a couple that we had known per e-mail about 6 months ago. As we hadn’t received their reply, we decided to go up the mountain range and try to meet them direct in their city, Toowoomba. We finish passing two days in pleasant company of this couple, Haydn and Dianne that are incredible nice people. It was an exclusive chance to exchange experiences, therefore they are motorcyclists with several trips on the world. Our next destination after Australia is Southeast Asia, place where Haydn and Dianne had covered, during 4 months, more than 20.000km. Except this, we discover that we will be following the same countries and almost the same time, when we will be heading to Europe, after visiting India, therefore they’ll initiate a new trip on this region. So, imagine how much of information we did obtain! And for the end, this visit was the strongest incentive for the great change of plans that we were studying since June, which in will put first Europe and just then, Africa. With this change, we’ll almost cut all the winters from our itinerary, with is really good.
From Toowoomba, we drove the way to the north passing as much as in the mountain range as in the coast of the Sunshine Cost. This place, differently of the Gold Cost, offers more tranquility. The beaches are also pretty and for this time, the one that gained more points was Noosa, for its welcoming city and for the natural beauties that are there.
But the adventure really started when, after crossing with a ferry boat from Hervey Bay, we reached with our car the biggest island of sand in the world, the Fraser Island (they say that Fraser Island possess a greater amount of sand that the desert of the Saara). It has 120km of extension and 15km of width with a very dense vegetation, which provides an exceptional growth of trees, some with more than 1,000 years. In this island, only vehicles 4x4 are authorized, therefore the conditions of the ways are precarious. Our winch Ekron took us off from two bad places that without it, it would be very difficult to get out, due the ground is 100% sand.
Always looking at the high and low tides, we’ve covered 300km in the island. We’ve visited some of the 200 crystalline lakes, we’ve swam in a transparent river, visited some look outs, natural swimming pools, shipwrecked, we’ve driven in the 75 Mile Beach (beach with almost 100km of extension) and to close with gold key, we’ve seen, of the Indian Head, the giant humpbacks whales. Giant cause they reach up to 15 meters of length and weighing the equivalent of 11 elephants (45.000kg). These whales migrate, on winter, until 16.000km looking for warmer water, and came back to the polar water, to feed themselves.
Some curiosities: the whale humpback female can generate up to 600 liters of milk per day to suckle its youngling that is born with 1.500kg; when they are in period of migration for hot waters, they can stay up to 5 months without eating; boarding of the expeditions to Space Voyager I and II, was possible to record the sound emitted for the whales humpback.
After three days in the island, was time to go north again. We pass Childers and Bundaberg, places where it is possible to work in the harvest of fruits. It is in these hours that we understand why the things are so expensive here, therefore to work with it, you can earn up to 22 dollars per hour! We have tried to get some job for some weeks, but than we saw that to work there, we would need a special VISA, and it could take too much time.
So, the expected Great Barrier Reef has started! The Australians call it as the eighth wonder of the world and we think they are right. With its 1.900km distributed in about 2.900 islands of reefs at the coast of Queensland, is the only alive organism that is possible to see from the space. The Great Barrier Reef is really spectacular, sheltering an amazing amount of sea creatures, between them: 500 varieties of colorful coral, 1.500 species of fish and 4.000 types of mollusks, and others.
We decide to explore it from the city 1770 (nominated in homage to the year of the discovery of Australia), therefore is a less tourist place and thus, the coral are more preserved. From there, we went with a boat to the Lady Musgrave Island which has 14 hectares of reefs of submerged corals and a small island, habitat of an enormous amount of birds that make its nests in the Pisoneas trees. The Pisoneas are interesting because when they fall, they continue its lives, growing from its proper trunks and roots.
When we arrived in the island, we took another boat with a glass floor, from where we could appreciate the life underneath of the water. We went for a walk between the Pisoneas and just after lunch we started snorkeling in the corals. We could find them in several forms, sizes and colors and crowded with fish and turtles. And guess who has come to make company? A small Reef Shark, that however left running of fear, hua, hua, hua. After some hours snorkeling, we took a half-submersible boat and still appreciated the sea life from about 2 meters deep in the boat.
Some interesting information about the corals:
- The corals are members of the Anthazoa class, that construct a skeleton of organic substance or calcium carbonate. These animals do not possess digestive or circulatory system, when the exchange of gases and fluids happens in the celenter, when the water enters and leaves the body of the animal through flux motivated for its proper tentacle;
- Some of the factors that hinder the continuous coral growth are temperature, salinity and PH of the water. It is therefore that the Barrier of Chorales is not a perfect closed barrier, therefore the channels of river water, that discharge itself in the sea change the characteristic of the water hindering the growth of the choral. Them, these zones between the reefs are called passes;
- Almost all the chorales construct colonies that can be in considerable sizes, the example of this Great Barrier of Chorales, but also exists some types that can live solitary;
- As we already wrote above, high temperature is bad to the life of the chorales, when the same ones support only up to 28 Celsius. The global heating as some other reasons are a great threat to this wonder… being able, in 2050, to exist less than 5% of what it is today.
In the way in return to the continent, we saw some whales again, but the experience we would like to register was the amused meeting with an équidna which was, slowly, crossing the road in front of us. And it walked so slow that it was almost run over for about four times.
At this moment we are in Cooktown initiating our trip to the Cape York, extremity north of Australia, where the crocodiles dominate the region, but this interesting episode will be for our next diary.

Grande Roy e Micheli. Este diário, ao tempo que estava lendo, me deixava mais e mais ancioso imaginando a beleza e a energia que há por tráz da narrativa. "Um frio na barriga", como dizemos sempre!
Espetacular o que está sendo vivido aí por voces. O mistério proporcionado pela falta das fotos, sem que visualizemos todo o diário, fêz deste um momento diferente desde quando acompanhamos vocês, ao passo que se torna ainda mais interessante acompanhar toda essa viagem. Claro que QUEREMOS vêr as fotos - muitas fotos - mas a vontade de estar junto nesta aventura foi maior que doustras vêzes. Valeu pela emoçao que está sendo projetada através deste magnífico diário. Parabéns.
